PLEASE Comment ~ Review & Giveaway: The Next Target by Nikki Arana

David C Cook / 2012

About the book:

It only took one bullet. Austia's friend and student fell dead. And with a glimpse of a newspaper headline, the young and recently widowed Austia knows more about what happened than the police. From that fatal night, Austia’s secret outreach to the U.S. Muslim community—in the guise of English language classes—becomes a target. Local Muslim extremists set their sights on ending her ministry and even her life. And the women she ministers to will be next.

A thick web of deceit closes in around Austia, and her circle of friends becomes smaller by the day, even as she finally opens herself to the idea of falling in love again. But who can she trust? Facing a spiritual battle that proves more treacherous than it at first seemed, Austia’s convictions are tested to their limits and her heart becomes primed for breaking. She must ask herself: how much she will risk to stay true to her herself, her faith, and to the lives of the women she serves?

My thoughts:

The Next Target was a really suspenseful and intriguing read. There were a few things I personally didn't like (i.e. Jesus appearing in Fatima's dream, Austia getting the response "Trust Me" when she was praying, etc.), but other than that, I really enjoyed it!

At first, I wasn't sure what to think about Zaki (whether to like his character or not), but as the story progressed, I found myself liking him more and more - he may even have been my favorite character in The Next Target.

While there wasn't much mystery (it was pretty much known who the "bad" guy was), there were a few tiny twists/surprises that I liked along with the little bit of romance.

It isn't really a surprise to me that I enjoyed this novel, I've enjoyed other books that are slightly similar to The Next Target (having to do with terrorists, etc.). One other thing I really liked was how I got to know the Muslim religion and some of their customs a little bit better.

The Next Target was a great read and I recommend it if you like suspense books or books that deal with terrorism.

*I received a complimentary ARC copy of this book from the publisher for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

  25. This sounds like an interesting read. I don't think I'd enjoy the terrorist part of the plot but the concept of sharing your faith when it could cost your life - that's something to get every U.S. Christian thinking! I'll spread the word so others can learn about this novel, too.

  26. i love reading fiction that teaches about other cultures, and it seems like this one is all around us, pretty well no matter where we live. i hope you get your kindle fire!

  29. Curious why you didn't like the appearance in the dream or hearing God's voice. Did you not believe either? Or do you prefer spirituality expressed differently in a novel?

  30. I find books where the writing is so clever that I 'learn' how to like a character. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck and I hope you win.

  47. Ohh, I like the cover! I also agree with a little bit of a romance being enjoyable... too much tension or relationship issues can get really annoying. And learning about the Muslim community seems like a great reason to read this... learning something new about a culture/religion I hadn't known before is always nice!

    Thanks for doing this giveaway!

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
