This week's question:
What’s the ONE super-hyped book you’ll NEVER read?
My answer:
There are actually two books/series that come to mind: Fifty Shades of Gray by E.L. James and The Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (I am NOT a vampire fan). While normally I don't like to say I'll never read a certain book (because you never know how you might feel later), I'm sure those are two I will never read.

I picked 50 Shades too. I also won't read the Twilight Series or the Harry Potter ones!

DeleteI totally agree! I started to read Twilight just to find out what all the fuss was about, but was not impressed and was turned off by the lust between Bella and Edward. I don't think I even got half-way through that book. And 50 Shades of Gray is another lustfest which I do NOT want to read.

ReplyDeleteIn addition to others already mentioned, I would have to add The Hunger Games. I teach enrichment classes at the elementary level and the sixth grade teachers wanted me to read this series with my 6th grade enrichment class. I refused on two levels. First, the books have a mature level rating and I have a personal standard that I do not read books with mature ratings for myself, let alone with a group of 11-year old students. Second, in a time when we read so often about school shootings, bombings, etc. (another prime example in the Colorado shootings just days ago), why would we want to have students reading books containing content where the government not only sanctions, but promotes and forces teens to murder each other? It is sick, in my opinion, that so many people revel in this topic.
ReplyDeleteI read The Hunger Games last year and while the story itself wasn't that graphic (if I remember correctly), I do think it is best for mature readers.

Good for you!! I wish there was some better rating system for books because I feel that a lot of youth fiction is worse then adult fiction and our kids are incouraged to read them at a younger age. I would never let my 6th grader read the Hunger Games I feel that it is for older teenagers.

DeleteThose were exactly my choices! I don't get the hype. I hate it when certain books get so much hype that people just blindly follow no matter what. What a waste of time in intrusion into the spirit of a person's inner light.

ReplyDeleteOh Melanie!Don't ever read The Shack! I read it because I wanted to find out what all of the hype was about. I wanted to throw the thing across the room when I was finished. It was terrible. There are so many people that LOVE it though. Ack! Don't read it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to - heard WAY too many bad things (biblically) about it. I don't get why so many bad books are popular - another one I won't read is The De Vinci Code.

ReplyDeleteWow. I really have to agree with you about fifty shades of gray! And it gets to me that Christian women are reaing it. I wouldn't read the Da Vinci Code either. I read the first six Harry Potter books in my preteens - early teen years and was actually a fan. Now the whole thing makes me cringe. I also read the Twilight series about 5 years ago (teen years) and honestly, she should've stopped at the first book. It just got really wierd after. I didn't watch anymore than the 1st movie though. Again, the series makes me cringe now!

I totally agree with 50 Shades of Grey. I dont get all the hype I have absolutly no interest, and it makes me sad that this type of book is so popular. I also will never read the Golden Compass series by Phillip Pullman.
