2-Year Blogoversary Celebration: Day Three ~ Mary Connealy!!

Welcome to Christian Bookshelf Reviews, Mary!! Thank you so much for celebrating my blog's 2-year Blogoversary with me! What is your soon-to-be-released book, Swept Away, about?

Ruthy MacNeil is swept away when her wagon train attempts a difficult river crossing. She isn't all that upset at being separated from the obnoxious family who raised her. All they've ever done is work her to the bone. She prayed for a chance to get away, and then came the raging flood. Alive but disoriented, she's rescued by Luke Stone...so unfortunately, there are more chances to die in her immediate future.

Luke is heading home to reclaim the ranch stolen from his family. But the men who killed his father are working hard to ensure Luke doesn't make it alive. He has no choice but to keep moving. Still, he can't just abandon Ruthy, so she'll have to come along.

His friends--a ragtag group of former Civil War soldiers--take an interest in the pretty gal. Luke thinks that's rather rude--he's the one who found her. For the first time in a long time, Luke is tempted to turn from his destructive path and be swept away by love.

Do you have a favorite birthday/party memory you like to share?

I'm from a family with eight kids and no money. We got an angel food cake for our birthday and precious little else. We each got one real birthday party in our growing up years and mine was…I invited the whole school to come home with me. That sound really big but the whole school had about fifteen kids in eight grades, I attended a one room country school house. So I brought them all home and it was great. We played. I was the center of attention. I remember nothing else. Was there cake? Did I get presents? I have no idea. But I loved it.

What is something the average reader wouldn't know about you?

Wow, what would it be, huh? I'm the third of eight kids. We grew up in a three bedroom farm house. It was a modest by fun life spent playing outdoors. I spent most of my time with my best friend Joani, who lived across the road from us in her four bedroom farm house with her six brothers and sister. I know now we were dirt poor but nobody had much and I don't remember going hungry so we were fine.

How many books have you written/published and do you have a favorite?

My 24th book just released. I've got contracts for twelve more. I've got ten additional books on my computer that have never sold. It's hard to say if I've got a favorite because I tend to be so immersed in the book I'm doing right now that it's always my favorite. So I'm going to declare Swept Away, releasing March 1st, to be my favorite because for right now, it's the truth.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I'm not really a quirky writer. I don't need a particular setting. I don't need the right soothing music or the perfect cup of tea or quiet. I can take a phone call for ten minutes then go right back to writing. Quirks? My whole life is quirks. I'm an insomniac and I turned to writing books at least in part to pass the hours of wakefulness in the night. So let's call that a quirk.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Sudoku puzzles. Read books. Snack. Yes, my thrilling life will excite all your blog readers almost beyond control. I have four daughters and two grandchildren and I love spending time with them.

I enjoy Sudoku puzzles, too, and of course reading. ;) Is there a place you like to visit, but haven't yet?

I've got a bucket list. I want to go to Yellowstone. I'd like to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (note the sedentary life reference above, the hike ain't gonna happen!). I'd like to see a sequoia tree and a redwood. I've never been to Washington D.C. I'd love to spend time on a sailboat. I'd like to go to Carlsbad Cavern and cruise up the inside passage to Alaska. Okay, I've named off enough stuff to keep me busy until death (at the rate I'm going!) so I'll stop now.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

Yes, but I'm not telling because it's the password to all my accounts online. So, Instead I'll tell you a beloved verse that I try and hang onto. Psalm 27: 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Do you have a favorite song and/or movie?

My favorite song of all time is Rich Mullins 'If I Stand'. And a very close second favorite is Chris Tomlin's 'How Great is Our God'.

A few this-or-that questions:

Snowstorms or Thunderstorms? Thunderstorms. Snowstorms get very unpleasant when your husband has to spend them outside fighting for the life of his cattle.

Tea or Coffee? Tea, specifically Tetley's Earl Grey in the drawstring tea bag.

Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla, though I didn't get into my generally oval shape by being picky

Call or Text? Call, I'm seriously one of those people who is going to die texting and driving, I just can't handle the distraction, plus I live in a place with bad cell phone reception so, though I have a cell phone, it's turned off about 90% of the time.

Early-bird or Night-owl? Night owl's are long asleep before I go to bed. What stays up longer than a night owl? A bat? No, a vampire? Maybe the moonlight. I am the moonlight, that sounds nice, if you don't count how tired I am all the stinking time.

Cats or Dogs? We live on a farm/ranch and I'm sorry but for me animals are just animals. I don't get to attached. We had a dog for years I really loved and yet I rarely spent time with him. Dingo, an Australian Shepherd. I'll bet I didn't pet that dog once a month.

Are you currently working on any new novels? If so, could you give us a hint?

Swept Away is book one of a three book series called Trouble in Texas. I'm busy polishing up books two 'Fired Up' and finishing book three 'Stuck Together'.

Thank you so much for being here! Is there anything else you like to tell readers and where can we find you on the web?

All I can think of it say is, If you knew me, really knew me, you'd see I'm the most regular person ever. The fact that I'm a published author is still stunning to me. So, if I can do it, anyone can make their dreams come true. Strive for it, pray for it, believe in it. God bless you all and keep reading. 1. I had a 'poor' childhood. I do remember being hungry a few times but I was never unloved. Those years that we were the poorest in riches were the best in my life. I had freedom, the whole outdoors and a little brother to enjoy them with, plus dogs and cats.

  2. I loved this interview so much! I love finding out about my favorite authors and it is even more awesome when I find so much in common with them! I'm also from a large family (though we beat yours by one), I like Sudoku-reading-and snacking (lol), I want to visit many of those places you mentioned (The Grand Canyon especially after reading Deep Trouble), Ps 27 is one of my fav chapters (I even memorized it), I like Thunderstorms-tea-and vanilla best, and I'm a CRAZY night owl-I have stayed up until 6 or 7 many times but 3-4 is my usual norm! Ok I guess I rambled a little much! You are an absolutely amazing author and I do crazy happy dances when I find out about a new book and even crazier ones when I actually have it in my possession! I literally squealed when I read that you have contracts for 12 more books-best discovery ever! Well I really have rambled too much now so I guess I'll end this comment by saying thank you!

We grew up pretty poor too; however, there was always food on the table. I think I had two outfits to wear to school each day. I'm sure the popular girls thought I was a real hick. I didn't care though!

  8. Yay for the poor childhood group! We had to go OUTSIDE and make our own entertainment. It was awesome! Great interview and love the synopsis of the new book! Love your bucket list of travel destinations Mary. My husband and I are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon soon, but I have no interest in hiking or riding down to the bottom. I just want to see the big hole! :)The sequoia's and redwoods are sooooo beautiful, they are definitely a MUST see! As always Melanie thanks for sharing another great author interview :) Have a great day ladies!

  13. I love your interview. You've got a great personality that really comes across in your answers. :) I'm the oldest of 5 kids - we had the exact same story: one birthday party each and little else. Only I waited so long to have mine that I never did so they ended up surprising me for my 18th instead. And our go-to birthday cake was also angel food - covered in whipped cream and strawberries - yum!

Swept Away sounds like a great book!

  20. Hello Mary, I almost thought I was reading my own lifestory when you spoke of how you grew up, it is the same as I did, I was #6 in a family of 9 kids, poor but didn't know it, enjoyed friends and family. you know today families don't have what we did and we truly were blessed.
thanks for sharing today on this wonderful blog.
I look forward to reading the story of this young woman finally getting away from a bad family.

  24. I'm sorry to be so slow stopping in today. Thank you for all these nice comments.
Jasmine, we had so many cats and dogs when we were kids, we took in any stray that wandered by. A big family of people and animals. My dad was a dairy farmer and we had pigs and chickens, the whole small farm life. It was wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Wonderful except when it was my turn to milk cows. At 5 am.

  26. Great interview. I also grew up poor, but with lots of love. We each got to pick what we wanted for supper (when we had the money) and we got a dollar each year for our birthday. Back in the 70's that was a lot more than today! :-) Great memories!

I have two things I cling to. Call them MOTTOs,
Things I say to keep from going MAD when I'm lying awake at night.
    1) Most of the most important events of my life have been done on four hours of sleep and I survived.
    2) I've been tired before, I'll be tired again

That's it. Very very deep thoughts. :)

  31. Hi Judy, don't you think most people had a lot less back then? I didn't feel particularly poor mostly. Even people with more money didn't necessarily flaunt it. It was a different world, far less materialistic.

  32. PATTY, I know what you mean, what is normal anyway. I suppose none of us really qualifies.

    ReplyDelete
  33. JULIE I did a ton of research for my book Deep Trouble, not to be confused with In Too Deep.
Deep Trouble was about romance at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. (you KNOW that happened all the time!)
I read a book called The Man Who Walked Through Time about a man hiking the length of the Grand Canyon, It was absolutely fascinating. It made me want to do that, hike there. Not happenin'.

  45. Hi Pol (Paula) I think the reason people are overweight today is almost exclusively because of air conditioning. In the heat of the summer, we didn't even want to eat and we always went outside. Sometimes it was too hot to run and play but it was always better outside than in. Who can get fat in a situation like that?
We also had little heat in winter, but it made us tough. (also whiners, but that's probably just me)

    1. Using a favorite Bible verse for a password is a great idea. Think about it.

      Genesis1:1

It's got numbers and letters and symbols : and you can remember it but no one else knows it (unless they fall for Melanie's sneaky attempt to get me to reveal it of course!!! BEWARE!)
And if you wrote it down somewhere no one would ever recognize it for a password, right? They'd just think it was a Bible verse.

WOW Mary, I didn't know we had so much in common, from NE (me from South Sioux City), like Soduku and reading, choose vanilla over chocolate, nite owl, don't get attached to animals and I would much rather call than write or text someone. If we are twins, you got all the talent, lol. I often thought about trying to write but I have no imagination so I'm glad one of us is able to do it, lol. My daughter that lives here in FL with us is now trying to get into doing some editing though, she may be doing her first book soon. Right now she is a paralegal and works in an attorney's office. She has worked for the state of Iowa and the state of Florida.

There was/is a mule ride down partway and back out... or you can pay to be 'choppered out'.. like a friend's dad was because he injured his back horsing about at the campsite at the bottom of the canyon! Love reading your interveiw!!

  113. What a great interview. Being the only insomniac night owl among a bunch of day workers can be odd at times. I love the "What stays up later than a night owl?" I usually see my hubby when he gets up to get ready for work :D I'm not a writer, but I get more done (housework, paperwork/bills, stuff on the internet) in the middle of the night than at any other time. For all that I have trouble w/ the insomnia, I love being a night owl, lol.
Thanks for the giveaway and giving us a chance at your great book!

  118. At 87 my dad still farms AND reads western books constantly. My bedroom looks like a library. He complains about some of the nasty stuff in the books so I have been sending him your books (after I've finished of course). He doesn't admit to it but his wife says he reads every one of them!

I'm back in Nicaragua with no Mary books - would love to win the new one!

  121. Oh Mary, I loved this interview so much. You started my day with laughter.I too, am from a family of 8 kids, but was #7. And, we also had to do a lot of sharing the same bedrooms. Guess we were dirt poor too, but never went hungry and always had lots of love and laughter, so we didn't know we were poor. We lived in a small town, but out in the country, so were lots of others like us. Of course, as always, there were some kids in town who seemed to always have money in their pocket. Didn't bother me much, except for them buying up all of the bubble gum when our town first got it. Then they'd sale it to the country kids for more. Not this girl. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction. I also have 4 kids, except have a boy in between. I also am not active enough to make that hike, but years did do a lot of walking when in WYO. hunting Elk, Deer, and Antelope. If you ever make it to Yellowstone, don't miss going to Jackson Hole Wyo. Real close. I lived there for 6 yrs. Loved it, and seeing the beautiful Teton Mountains everyday. Also beautiful lakes you could sail on. I lived in Carlsbad NM for awhile(on a pipeline job) so went down into the Cavern. It was a long walk with small kids. (or without) So, we took the elevator out. I think they have a lot more open now. I too, am a night owl, so think we would get along swell. Thanks Melanie for having Mary for this interview. I would love to win your book Mary. If not, maybe on Petticoats and Pistols, MAXIE mac262(at)me(dot)com
