Inside & Out Book Tag

I saw this book tag on Books, Biscuits, and Tea and it sounded like a lot of fun, so I thought I'd join along. The tag was originally created by MathomBooks on YouTube.

I ~ Inside flap/Back of the book summaries: Too much info? Or not enough (Discuss)

Sometimes the book summary doesn't have enough info, but then there are times that it has way too much and spoils the whole plot! I'd prefer knowing less about the story, and being surprised, than knowing pretty much everything that is going to happen in the book.

N ~ New book: What form do you want it in? Be honest: Audiobook, E-Book, Paperback, or Hardcover?

I used to say paperback, but now I'm going with eBook. My shelves are overflowing (in fact, I just went through them and minimized my "keep" pile).

S ~ Scribble while you read? Do you like to write in your books, taking notes, making comments, or do you keep your books clean clean clean? (Tell us why)

No way. If I take notes, I use a separate piece of paper/notebook. I feel it takes away from the story if there is writing in a book.

I ~ In your best voice, read for us your favorite 1st sentence from a book.

This one is hard for me. I hardly ever remember beginning sentences from books. I'll just go with a book I read last month - Nightmare City. The opening line drew me in right away!

Tom was in heaven when the phone rang. At least, he thought it was heaven. He had never been there before, and the look of the place surprised him. It wasn't what he was expecting at all.

D ~ Does it matter to you whether the author is male or female when you're deciding on a book? What if you're unsure of the author's gender?

That doesn't matter to me at all. My favorite authors are a mix of both males and females.

E ~ Ever read ahead? or have you ever read the last page way before you got there?

Sometimes I read a few sentences or pages ahead (when the story is boring me, or if it's a really suspenseful scene and I have to know what happens next!). I very rarely (if ever) read the end of a book, unless I DNF it.

&

~ Organized bookshelves, or Outrageous bookshelves?

Not that organized. I have a semi-organization system: by review and non-review books, read and to-read/reread books, and favorite books. I do end up changing the way my books are on my shelves a lot, though...

U ~ Under oath: have you ever bought a book based on the cover (alone)?

Not that I remember. I have become interested in reading a book just by the cover, but I have to read the description and/or reviews first, to see if it's something for me.

TTake it outside to read, or stay in?

Usually stay in, but there are times, when it's warm out, I like to go outside and read (love the sound/feel of nature while reading!).

How about you? Please leave a comment with your answers or a link to your blog post. Thanks for stopping by! :)

  1. I - More often there's too much rather than not enough...I like to be surprised too, though I know there's a fine line to walk so that the reader can be informed enough to know whether or not the story will interest her!

    N - Definitely prefer paperback!

S - I never make comments in books. I didn't start taking notes until I started reviewing books, and I always take them in a separate notebook.

I - Not sure, but I know this intro from Andrew Klavan's "The Last Thing I Remember" took me in:
Suddenly I woke up strapped to a chair.
    "What . . .?" I whispered.
Dazed, I looked around me. I was in a room with a concrete floor and cinder block walls.

D - Male or female doesn't matter to me, though I read a lot of Christian romances, which tend to be penned by female authors. :) I LOVE adventure though, and usually those are written by men.

E - Nope, never read ahead, though I've been known to skim when I find parts boring.

O - I try to keep them organized, though they're beginning to overflow!

U - I don't think I'd ever dare to buy a book based only its cover. :) Too risky!

T - I usually read inside, but if I had a nice place to read outside, I'd do it!

  4. Melanie, I love this post! It's a great idea. I may have to do one on my blog sometime....

I totally agree with the I - inside flap/back summaries. Plot spoilers are no fun! Sometimes less is more. A good book summary leaves a little mystery to the plot -even if it's not a mystery/suspense. Happy reading!

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
