Review: The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen
 The Ascendance Trilogy #1
Scholastic Press / 2012
~Mainstream YA Novel~

About the book:
THE FALSE PRINCE is the thrilling first book in a brand-new trilogy filled with danger and deceit and hidden identities that will have readers rushing breathlessly to the end.

In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.

As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.

An extraordinary adventure filled with danger and action, lies and deadly truths that will have readers clinging to the edge of their seats.

My thoughts:

The False Prince was a very good story. I was looking for a new audiobook to listen to, and I had gotten this one free, otherwise I'm not sure I would have thought to read it...I'm so glad I did! Even though it took me a while to complete the book, I was interested throughout and enjoyed it much more than I had anticipated.

I really like Sage's character. I liked how stubborn he was and that he didn't just go along with Conner's plans, like the other boys. The story had some surprises and the ending leaves me wondering what's going to happen next. After listening to an author Q&A, I think I know some of the things that'll happen in the next book, but I look forward to reading "The Runaway King" to see if I'm right.

Overall, I loved this book. It was a really good fantasy read and I recommend it. If you listen to audiobooks, I also recommend the audiobook version of The False Prince. The narrator was great and I think that's another reason I enjoyed this book so much.

--Clean read. There's some violence; but, other than that, I can't think of anything objectionable.

*I did not get this book for review. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
