Reviewing Opening Moves by Steven James

About the book:
Milwaukee, 1995. In a city still reeling from the crimes of Jeffrey Dahmer, a woman’s body is found with the lungs removed. Local cops think a Dahmer copycat is on the loose.

But Patrick Bowers, working as a homicide detective for the Milwaukee Police Department, sees from the timing and location of the crime that this is not a copycat at all, but a killer with an entirely different agenda.

As he pursues the madman using his unique skills and ice-cold logic, Bowers finds himself thinking more and more like his demented prey. The problem is that the more he understands the killer’s mind, the more his own thoughts are being warped. And if he’s not careful he may not be able to recover his mind—or survive the case.

My thoughts:

Opening Moves was just as good the second time reading it! Even though it's only been a couple years since I originally read it, I still had forgotten a lot of the story, so things definitely ended up surprising me again.

I loved seeing how Patrick and Ralph met. It was fun how they interacted with each other and I loved the ending. It made me very eager to pick up The Pawn and continue reading Patrick's story.

Overall, I loved this book. The crimes in Opening Moves are very gruesome and cringe-worthy, but they're not glamorized. If you are a reader who can't stomach gruesome books, then this probably isn't a book for you. BUT, if you love thrillers and aren't creeped out easily, then I recommend it!

*I had received a review copy of this book earlier and I've already reviewed it. This second review was not required, I just wanted to share my thoughts on my reread. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

  2. Ooh, a prequel. I started with The Pawn(really enjoying it so far!), so I might go back and read this after I've completed the whole series since it was published later on. I think that'll make for a more...sentimental experience, if that makes sense? Thanks for the review!

    1. That's a great way to read the series! I agree, I think reading Opening Moves after you've completed the series will make you appreciate things in this book more (like when Ralph and Patrick meet). I'm glad you are really enjoying The Pawn so far. Hope you continue to enjoy the series.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
