Review: Wings of a Dream by Anne Mateer

About the book:
Rebekah Hendricks dreams of a life far beyond her family's farm in Oklahoma, and when dashing aviator Arthur Samson promises adventure in the big city, she is quick to believe he's the man she's meant to marry.

While she waits for the end of the Great War and Arthur's return, her mother's sister falls ill. Rebekah seizes the opportunity to travel to Texas to care for Aunt Adabelle, sure that her glamorous and exciting life is about to start.

But the Spanish flu epidemic changes everything. Faced with her aunt's sickness, Arthur's indecisiveness, and four children who have no one else to care for them, Rebekah discovers she must choose between her desire to escape the type of life she's always led and the unexpected love that just might change the dream of her heart.

My thoughts:

Wings of a Dream was just as good as I had hoped. After reading Anne Mateer's newest novel, Playing By Heart, I was very excited to pick up this story (which is her debut novel) and I loved it!!

The story was fantastic and even heartbreaking at times. I really felt for the characters and especially the kids. There was a little bit of a love triangle (square?) -- because you didn't know who of the three guys Rebekah would end up with (if any). While I wasn't a huge fan of that aspect, I did think the romance when it finally came time for that was sweet...and the ending was tear-worthy.

All in all, a very touching story and I definitely recommend it. I am looking forward to reading Anne Mateer's two other books, A Home for My Heart & At Every Turn, when I get the chance.

  1. Although I think I have another book of Anne's this is the only one I have read so far, I too loved it! Guess I was worried another of her books wouldn't match up. I will have to dig them out of my TBR stack😀

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
