End of Year Book Survey – 2013

I participated in this a couple years ago and decided to do it again this year!

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist)

2013 Release:

Backlist:

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

There are a couple books that I could choose, but I think this one was the most disappointing:

Allegiant (Divergent Series) by Veronica Roth.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?

Dear Mr. Knightley: A Novel by Katherine Reay

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?

I think this is the book I recommended to people most last year.

5. Best series you discovered in 2013?

The Culper Ring Series by Roseanna M. White. I haven't read the last two (as the one was just released and the other one isn't released yet), but I loved the first three! :)

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

I'm very eclectic, but contemporary usually isn't my cup of tea. Last year, though, I read a couple contemporaries that I loved, especially the one below (it made my favorites' list!).

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013?

or

9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

The King: The Bowers Files by Steven James

One of my goals this year is to reread the entire Patrick Bowers Files (Opening Moves, The Pawn, The Rook, The Knight , The Bishop, The Queen, The King) prior to the release of Checkmate.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?

No question about it:

I love winter covers and I can't think of one thing I don't like about this one. I love the snowflakes in Piper's hair, the blue sky, the mountain, the font/design of the title, the scarf Piper is wearing, how her teeth are showing, and that her eyes have red lines (that makes it look authentic and not photoshopped to me).

11. Most memorable character in 2013?

This is kind of hard for me to answer, but I think I'm going to go with Matt from My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade just because he is a hockey player and that made him memorable to me.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013?

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013?

These two nonfiction books:

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to finally read?

There's three:

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013?

I'm horrible at remembering quotes from books I read, but here is one I loved from a recent read: Quest for Celestia: A Reimagining of The Pilgrim's Progress by Steven James

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2013?

According to Goodreads, the shortest was Free Four (13 pages) and the longest was Allegiant (526 pages)

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (Be careful of spoilers!)

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2013 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).

The McKenna family's relationship with each other and Landon. :) Shattered (Alaskan Courage Book #2)

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2013 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

There's actually a lot that could be my favorite, but I'm going to go with The King: The Bowers Files because I absolutely love this series and this was another great read!

20. Best Book You Read In 2013 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:

There's two:

Both of these books I read because my friend, Crystal, recommended them. I ended up loving both books, too! :D I'm sure there are others, as well, but those are the first ones that come to mind.

21. Genre You Read The Most From in 2013?

I don't know the exact stats, but it's either historical or suspense.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013?

I don't have fictional crushes, but Blaze from Made to Last (Where Love Begins Book #1) by Melissa Tagg was such a great character! Can't wait to read his book, Here to Stay (Where Love Begins Book #2), when it releases!

23. Best 2013 debut you read?

Made to Last (Where Love Begins Book #1) by Melissa Tagg, but Mistaken: First Impressions Are Never What They Seem by Karen Barnett was another great debut!

24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013?

This one is a hard question, so I'm just going to pick a book (or two!) that, when I think back, really captivated me.

25. Book That Was The Most Fun To Read in 2013?

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013?

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out?

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2013 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2014?

The Frontiersman's Daughter by Laura Frantz

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2014 (non-debut)?

Again, I can't choose just one.

Checkmate by Steven James
Love's Fortune by Laura Frantz
Silenced (Alaskan Courage) by Dani Pettrey
Here to Stay by Melissa Tagg
Blur (Blur Trilogy) by Steven James
Deluge by Lisa T. Bergren

3. 2014 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

4. Series Ending You Are Most Anticipating in 2014?

Checkmate by Steven James

Checkmate is said to be the last book in the series, but I'm hoping Steven James decides to write more books with Patrick Bowers. :D

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2014?

Write a review (no matter how short) on Goodreads for every book I read in 2014. This was also my goal last year, but I failed to review a couple of my reads. Hoping to accomplish it this year! Also, as I stated earlier, I want to reread the entire Patrick Bowers Files prior to the release of Checkmate. :)

  1. So many good books and I love these questions! A little more time, and I'd do this on my blog...oh well, too busy and it's a miracle I'm mostly caught up with reviews right now. ;) But yes, great list! I really enjoyed seeing what we had in common. :)

  2. This is interesting! Was Allegiant really that disappointing? I'm planning on reading that soon. Have you written a review for it?

    1. I wrote a review on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/751439172

I just didn't like Tris in this book and found the story boring (it seemed like nothing much happened until near the end). I hope you enjoy it, though! :)

  3. Entertaining list! I see Steven James's name on your list alot but I've never read any of his books. I just might have to try one of his books now.

    1. I love thrillers, so his books are perfect for me. I was pleasantly surprised by Quest for Celestia because, even though it wasn't a thriller, I still loved it. :)

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
