Hi friends,

I’m super excited to share my latest novel with you. COLD SHOT takes place in the Chesapeake Bay region where I live, and today I’ll be sharing a few fun, get-to-know-the-area, facts with you:

Did you know?

• The Bay holds about 18 trillion gallons of water. That amount of water would fill more than fifty billion bathtubs to the brim. The Bay is full of people kayaking, swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and jet skiing. My favorite is sailing. There’s nothing like a gorgeous, sunny day with a nice cool breeze to glide through the water.

• A person 6 feet tall could wade through more than 700,000 acres of the Bay without becoming completely submerged. It’s great to wade through and look for fish and oyster shells.  

• The deepest part of the Bay, called "The Hole" is more than 170 feet deep.
 Not sure I want to know what lives at the bottom. 

• 


• The Bay produces about 500 million pounds of seafood per year. My favorite seafood item? Hard-shell crabs. They are practically a Maryland institution. You steam them with Old Bay seasoning (another Maryland favorite) and you’ve got one delicious meal.

• The Chesapeake Bay is full of gorgeous lighthouses. You can tour them here: http://www.visitmaryland.org/list/take-tour-marylands-lighthouses

• In 1807, two Newfoundland dogs named Sailor and Canton escaped a shipwrecked British vessel off the coast of Maryland. The hardy Newfies were observed to be effective retrievers, and locals bred them with other dogs from the area. Sailor and Canton's offspring marked the beginning of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

• The Bay and its tributaries have more than 11,00 miles of shoreline—more than the entire West Coast.

• The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is considered to be one of the world’s scariest bridges. According to Travel & Leisure magazine, “Drivers are notoriously afraid of this bridge, as it’s subjected to frequent—and often violent—storms. And when the bad weather hits, forget about visibility: get to the middle of this five-mile-long bridge and you can barely see land.”  My family and I drive over it every summer when head for the local beach and on a clear day it’s gorgeous! On a not-so-clear-day it can be a little scary.
