With Errol and the others imprisoned and the identity of the rightful heir to the throne still hidden in secrecy, Illustra is on the verge of civil war--and threatened by hostile forces gathering on every side.

A dangerous mission to free Errol is attempted, but the dangers facing the kingdom mount with every passing moment. The barrier has fallen, ferrals are swarming toward the land, and their enemies draw ever closer. Will the discovery of the true heir turn back the tide of Illustra's destruction?

Margaretha knows she could never be a spy---not only does she tend to talk too much, she's sure Colin is completely wrong about her potential betrothed. Review: Storm Siren by Mary Weber

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I5QX0D0?ie=UTF8&camp=213733&creative=393177&creativeASIN=B00I5QX0D0&linkCode=shr&tag=chrisbooksrev-20&linkId=ORC2UAWXCQVBLMEV&qid=1407533370&sr=8-1&keywords=storm+siren
About the book:
"I raise my chin as the buyers stare. Yes. Look. You don't want me. Because, eventually, accidentally, I will destroy you."

In a world at war, a slave girl's lethal curse could become one kingdom's weapon of salvation. If the curse - and the girl - can be controlled.

As a slave in the war-weary kingdom of Faelen, seventeen-year-old Nym isn't merely devoid of rights, her Elemental kind are only born male and always killed at birth - meaning, she shouldn't even exist.

Standing on the auction block beneath smoke-drenched mountains, Nym faces her fifteenth sell. But when her hood is removed and her storm-summoning killing curse revealed, Nym is snatched up by a court advisor and given a choice: be trained as the weapon Faelen needs to win the war, or be killed.

Choosing the former, Nym is unleashed into a world of politics, bizarre parties, and rumors of an evil more sinister than she's being prepared to fight . . . not to mention the handsome trainer whose dark secrets lie behind a mysterious ability to calm every lightning strike she summons.

But what if she doesn't want to be the weapon they've all been waiting for?

Set in a beautifully eclectic world of suspicion, super abilities, and monsters, Storm Siren is a story of power. And whoever controls that power will win.

Interview & Giveaway: Ashlee Willis ~ Author of The Word Changers!

Welcome to Christian Bookshelf Reviews, Ashlee!! Will you tell us a little about yourself?

Thanks so much for having me on your lovely blog, Melanie! I’m a wife and mother, and the only thing that means more to me than my family is God. I’m a pretty strong introvert, so I usually have to push myself to leave my comfort zone, but I always find it worth it when I do! I love the outdoors, crafting, playing the piano, and (of course!) reading.

What is your novel, The Word Changers, about?

The Word Changers is about a 15-year-old girl named Posy. She comes from a troubled home, and one day when she’s attempting to forget her troubles, she finds a book and falls straight into it. At first she thinks it’s a dream come true because she’s fallen right into the role of the princess, who for some reason has run away from the story. But Posy soon learns that all isn’t well in the fairy tale kingdom she’s become a part of. The characters of the book speak of their Author as if he’s a myth – they haven’t heard from him in centuries – and the cruel king who has taken control of the Plot holds Posy in his grasp now, too. Posy has to travel to the outer edges of the story, and even beyond, hoping to find the Author and bring him back into the story he created.

Where do you like to write?

I wrote my first full-length book in a spiral notebook when I was 14 years old. I never stayed in one place to write it – part of it was written in the woods behind our farm, part of it was written leaning against a haystack in the field, part of it was written in our barn loft, part of it was written sitting in front of our wood stove at night. I’ve found that things haven’t changed much as I’ve got older. Although I constantly tell myself I’d love to have a space dedicated specifically to writing, I’m just not sure it would work. I love to move around, and I take my laptop everywhere! Coffee shops, libraries, parks, my bed, my chair, trips in the car (while my husband drives, of course!) – nowhere is off limits. It can be stimulating – when my body is on the move and my eyes are seeing different things, my imagination comes alive.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

I love spending time outdoors. My 7-year-old son and I hike through the woods, splash around in the creek behind our house, take bike rides or walks nearly every day – even when it’s snowing or raining! I just love being as near to God’s creation as possible – it makes me feel more alive and it refreshes my spirit for both writing and living. I also love crocheting and crafting – it’s a creative outlet, like writing, but so different that it makes a wonderful change sometimes!

What is your favorite genre to read and why?

My favorite genre to read is also the genre in which I write – fantasy. The idea of creating worlds that are different than our own is just fascinating to me. And yet those worlds we create can still be so linked to the one we live in. It reminds me of the things we as Christians are aware of – the battle of good and evil that is here and so real, yet is invisible because it is living within us. I think the fantasy genre gets some of those ideas across better than any other. That’s why it’s always had a special place in my heart.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?
Oh, my! What a difficult one. I’ve always really loved 1 Corinthians 3:9:  “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.”  It reminds me, especially where my writing is concerned, that I am only the tool, and God is the true power behind any good that comes of what I do.

Some this-or-that questions:

Snowstorms or Thunderstorms? Thunderstorms!  I even enjoy it when our electricity goes out and we have to light all the candles J
Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate all the way!
Tea or Coffee? Tea.
Call or Text? Call. Nothing, for me, can replace the sound of another person’s voice.
Cats or Dogs? I love them both! But if it came down to it, I’d have to say cats.
Early-bird or Night-owl? Big-time night owl!
Introvert or Extrovert? Introvert.
Facebook or Twitter? Hmm … I enjoy Facebook more, but I’ve been more successful on Twitter.
Mystery or Romance? After fantasy, there’s nothing better than a cozy mystery!
Sneakers or Sandals? Sneakers in winter, sandals in summer J

Are you currently working on any new novels? If so, could you give us a hint?

I certainly am! I recently finished the first book of a YA fantasy duology. I’m letting it sit for a while before I begin editing it, and have begun work on its sequel in the meantime. As with all books in this stage, it’s hard to give details, since by the time I’m finished with the second book many things could change! After I am finished it will have to go to my agent, who will then send it out to publishers, who then may or may not take an interest! It’s a long road. But as things progress I plan to post updates and tidbits about it on my blog!

Thank you so much for being here! Is there anything else you’d like to tell readers and where can we find you on the web?

I want all your great readers to know that I am thrilled they are interested in my book and hope they’ll ask me anything they are curious about! They can visit my blog at http://ashleewillisauthor.wordpress.com, follow me on Twitter @BookishAshlee, or find me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AshleeWillisAuthor. Thanks once again for having me, Melanie! It was an honor.

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen
 The Ascendance Trilogy #1
Scholastic Press / 2012
~Mainstream YA Novel~

About the book:
THE FALSE PRINCE is the thrilling first book in a brand-new trilogy filled with danger and deceit and hidden identities that will have readers rushing breathlessly to the end.

In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king's long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner's motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword's point -- he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage's rivals have their own agendas as well.

As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner's sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.

Review: Quest for Celestia: A Reimagining of the Pilgrim's Progress by Steven James

About the book:
Join Kadin on his journey to Celestia in this creative reimagining of John Bunyan's Christian classic, The Pilgrim's Progress. Kadin's faith is challenged and strengthened as he seeks to rid himself of the growth on his neck and make his way to Celestia. Steven James uses his master storytelling ability to re-create the life-changing journey of The Pilgrim's Progress for readers ages 14 to 19.

My thoughts:

Quest for Celestia was a great read! I wasn't too sure if I'd like it, but once I read a couple chapters, I was into the story and ended up loving it!

Ever since I began reading the Patrick Bowers Files, in 2011, Steven James has been one of my favorite authors. I've enjoyed all ten fiction novels I've read of his, including Quest for Celestia. This book had a different feel to it than the other books (as can be expected, since they are thrillers and this is a fantasy/reimagining of The Pilgrim's Progress).

Overall, I loved reading this book! I'm so glad I decided to buy it earlier this month. I recommend Quest for Celestia to anyone that typically enjoys these types of reads. I am eagerly anticipating the release of Steven James' upcoming books, Checkmate (Patrick Bowers Files) and Blur (Blur Trilogy).

*I did not get this for review. I purchased my copy. As always, all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Just a note: this book was rereleased in 2012 with a new cover. Here it is:

I used the original, since that is the edition I read.

Review: Merlin's Blade by Robert Treskillard

Merlin's Blade by Robert Treskillard
Blink (Zondervan) / 2013
Find on: Amazon, Goodreads

About the book:

Merlin's Greatest Weakness Could Become His Greatest Strength
When a meteorite crashes near a small village in fifth-century Britain, it brings with it a mysterious black stone that bewitches anyone who comes in contact with its glow---a power the druids hope to use to destroy King Uthur's kingdom. The only person who seems immune is a young, shy, half-blind swordsmith's son named Merlin.

As his family, village, and even the young Arthur, are placed in danger, Merlin must face his fears and his blindness to take hold of the role ordained for him. But when he is surrounded by adversaries, how will he save the girl he cherishes and rid Britain of this deadly evil ... without losing his life?

Book includes location map and detailed character index.

My rating:

My thoughts:

I don't think I've ever read a book about the legends of King Arthur (especially not one where he is a young child in the story) and I'm not very familiar with the legends, so I found Merlin's Blade really interesting and enlightening. :)

The characters were great and I definitely felt for Merlin - what with him becoming half-blind at a young age. Garth was an intriguing character and my feelings for him kept changing throughout the story.

The writing was good, but there were a few times the story was a little hard for me to follow - nothing too bad and it was probably just because I'm not familiar with these types of books.

Overall, Merlin's Blade was a great fantasy read! While this isn't my favorite type of book and it was a slower read for me, I did still really enjoy it and recommend it for fans of this genre. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series, Merlin's Shadow, which releases next month. :)

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
