About the book:
You never know what you're really made of until you lose everything.

Texas socialite Claire Massey is living the dream--designer clothes, luxury cars, stunning homes. But everything comes crashing down when her charming cattle broker husband is arrested for fraud. Suddenly she finds herself facing attorneys, a media frenzy, and a trail of broken hearts. My thoughts:

A Woman of Fortune is a book I was drawn to by the cover alone (it's so gorgeous!) and I decided to read it because the story also sounded interesting. Unfortunately, it wasn't for me and I didn't like it.

I disliked the characters. There were glimpses where they were likeable, but for the most part I couldn't relate to them and didn't like how spoiled/selfish some seemed. I also didn't like the whole situation involving Brian - I really disliked most of his actions because of the context (which I won't say, to avoid spoilers).

Surprisingly, I think my favorite character was Tuck. I loved his constant love for Claire and how he was remorseful for his actions. Another thing I liked about the story was what Claire decided to do regarding the future.

In the end, A Woman of Fortune was a book I didn't really care for. I had a hard time finishing it, even though the story moved quickly, because it didn't interest me anymore. I will say, though, the last couple chapters were much more engaging to me than the previous ones.

I'll end by saying this: please don't take my opinion alone on this book. There are several reviewers that loved A Woman of Fortune (it seems like I'm the only one who didn't like it) and maybe it just wasn't a read for me. If you are a fan of books with politics, scandal, and family issues, you might enjoy it. I truly wanted to love this book and I'm sorry I didn't.

  3. I have read a lot this year! Tough question. I have several books I really enjoyed. I will choose Full Steam Ahead only because I read it in less than 24 hours. I do have a last though! Some are new authors to me too! The Ransom by MaryLu Tyndall ranks up there as well along with Lori Benton and Melissa Tagg.

  4. It is difficult to write a negative review of an author's "baby" but you have given us your honest opinion. That doesn't necessarily mean it is a bad book, but it just means that you're one of the readers who did not care for it. Please enter me in the drawing for the two books. And thank you for your honesty.

  5. The cover certainly is beautiful. I also would have picked it up for that alone.

  6. My favorite read of 2014 is Ekaterina by Susan Downs and Susan May Warren. A close second and third would be Courting Marrow Little by Laura Frantz and the Alaska Courage series by Dani Pettrey.

  7. Thanks for your honest review of "A Woman of Fortune." I've also found myself wanting to read it based solely on the cover. I might not pursue it quite so hard now. :)

My favorite read of 2014 has been Melanie Dickerson's "The Merchant's Daughter." I think. :) I also loved "Meant to Be Mine" and "Fireflies in December," though that's an older book.

  11. Sorry you didn't like the book Melanie, but there are always some books that some people won't like. But, we have many choices. I'm glad. I have started some that just weren't my cup of tea, and put it aside. But, you were being honest. And, you did say others might like it. I like Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand.
I like Kellie, so will give the book a chance if I'm lucky enough to win your books. Thanks for this giveaway. Thanks. Maxie > mac262(at)me(dot)com <
