What is your latest book, Deluge, about?

It’s the 5th in the River of Time Series, which follows the Betarrini and Forelli families in medieval Italy, after two girls time-travel back. In this book, they all face the Black Plague, which was grueling.

You also released the first book in your new Dystopian series, Remnants: Season of Wonder, this year. Was it harder or easier to write a book set in a post-apocalyptic future vs. Medieval Italy?

Medieval. Because with futuristic, you’re just making it all up—tons of world building. With medieval, you have SOME facts to undergird your fiction.

Do you outline your stories or are you more of a "panther"?

Used to be an outliner, chapter by chapter. Now I know the chief event that happens in each “act” of the book, and I pants my way to each of them.

What are your favorite and least favorite genres to read and why?

What is the most exciting part of your life right now?

I am a bit taken aback. 'Tis quite the honor.

Are you open and friendly to newcomers?

In portion. 'Tis my responsibility to be wary, cautious, as well as welcoming. M'lord relies upon me to be so.

What is your overall goal in life?

To live fully, laugh every day, and love all those dear to me, with everything in me.

How are you and Lord Greco getting along now?

We have made our peace. He's always been a brother to me. He simply had some difficulties to overcome that made it a trial, for a time.

How are things between you and Lia? Do I hear wedding bells in the future? (LOL! Had to ask!)

If I have my way, there shall be. Lady Evangelia, however, is yet to be convinced.

The River of Time series is one of THE BEST series I've read so far! Tributary, the newest addition, was no exception because the greatness continued in this novella!

My favorite characters from this series have pretty much always been Lia and Luca (he's on the cover of Tributary) and I was so glad that a majority of this story featured them. Oh, and the scene where Luca gets a haircut courtesy of Lia was hilarious and probably one of my favorites! I just loved it!

Filled with romance, suspense, action, humor, and so much more, Tributary held my attention throughout and is now one of my favorite books! It seems like with each addition the series just gets better and better. Bourne used to be my favorite in the series, but I now think Tributary is - it was THAT good!

I am desperately hoping for more River of Time books because one: I love the series, and two: Lia's story doesn't seem "finished" (in my opinion). So... Lisa, PLEASE write more!!!

If you are a fan of YA, time-travel, or romance/fantasy novels, you should definitely read this series. All of the books are great and I think they should be read in order because otherwise there would be major spoilers.

For a while, Gabi worked hard at helping me along, aware that I’d sacrificed a lot to stay here, so she could stay here. But ever since she got married, all she really had time for was Marcello. Marcello, Marcello, Marcello. Blah, blah, blah. It was kind of nauseating, really.

And totally sweet.

And epically romantic.

So yeah…I was a little conflicted. I’d kinda gained my dad and lost my sis. Not to be a whiner or anything…I know that sisters have close times and distant times…but I wasn’t expecting the my-sis-permanently-left-me-for-a-guy feelings until I was in my twenties or thirties, you know? Not when I was seventeen…

I was so happy when I heard that Lisa Bergren decided to write more River of Time books! I had thought that Torrent was the end, but thankfully I was wrong! I think Bourne might actually be my favorite in the series and that's saying something considering they're all favorites of mine! :D

I loved how there was a lot of Lia and Luca's story (they are my favorite characters) in Bourne. I also really enjoyed how the story's point-of-view changed from Gabi to Lia throughout - it was great getting to see what each sister was thinking.

Bourne is a short novella (about 120 pages), but it didn't seem that short when I was reading it. Right away my emotions were caught when I learned that Marcello had been injured and from there it was just an emotional roller coaster.

While Bourne would probably be great on it's own, I do recommend first reading Waterfall, Cascade, and Torrent. If you enjoy YA, fantasy, and/or romance novels, I think you'll love the River of Time series!

I loved every part of Bourne! I am happily (and somewhat impatiently) waiting for the next River of Time release from Lisa Bergren!

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 5)

The final week of 'Waterfall Wednesdays'!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTERS 24-28

1.  After Gabi is injured, the doctor gives her a tonic.  Gabi questions the doctor several times what is in it but he refuses to tell.  Would have you taken the tonic in Gabi situation?


No, I don't think I would. I'm a vegan, so I'm particular about what I consume; but even putting that aside, if he wouldn't tell me what was in the tonic, I would be very leery about taking it.

2.  Before the games Gabi asks Lia to let Lord Forabosch win in the archery event as people especially Lord Forabosch are becoming suspicious of them.  But during the games Lord Forabosch upsets Lia trying to throw her off her game. So Lia decides to win.  Do you think she did the right thing by not letting Lord Forabosch bully her or do you think she took an unnecessary risk?


I definitely think she did the right thing. She showed that she was one of the best archers.

3.  When Gabi is dying and she and Lia decide to return to the tombs so they can get the cure at home but they have to tell Marcello the truth.  Even though Marcello thinks that it is madness that they are from the future he believes in Gabi because he loves her.  Do you think this is believable?  What would you have done if you were Marcello?


It's unbelievable, yet in the story completely believable! I have no idea what I would have done if I was Marcello, but I think what he did was great.

4.       In the end Gabi and Lia return home.  Do you think Gabi will return to Marcello? Would you go back?

I've read 'Cascade' and 'Torrent' so I know if she does or doesn't, but I'm pretty sure that I was hoping for her to return.


5.  Looking back at Waterfall what was your favourite moment?


My favorite moment? I have to pick just one? Hmm... I don't know if I can. I loved the whole book!!!

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 4)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTERS 18-23

1. Gabi and Lia both face several life and death situations in these chapters, having to pick up weapons in defense of those they love and experiencing first hand the brutality of close combat. If you had the choice between picking up a weapon and standing on the front lines or staying behind to tend to the wounded as necessary, which would you choose?


That is a tough question. I really don't know for sure, but I would like to think that I would fight to defend others.


2. Both girls get to wear extraordinary gowns to their victory celebration; what would your dream medieval gown look like?

It would be a long, gold, red, or blue gown with a ribbon/band around the waist and fabric that shimmers in the light.


3. Gabi has crude stitches put in and must endure both their removal as well as the cauterization of the wound. How is your threshold for pain? Do you think you would have simply gritted your teeth as Gabi does?


I like to think that I'm good with tolerating pain, but I probably would have cried. Though, of course, I don't know for sure.


4. Marcello wants to properly court Gabi after they express mutual feelings of affection, wanting to speak with her mother about his intentions. What do you think is the most romantic aspect of medieval courtship?


I don't know. All of it. Especially how the men act like such gentlemen.

5. Gabi and Lia find themselves with conflicting desires toward the end with Lia wanting to return home and Gabi hoping to stay. Do you think that Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay, or is Lia being unfair to Gabi for demanding they go? A little of both?

Definitely a little of both. I see Gabi's point - she's found love, but I also see Lia's point - her friends, her life is back home.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Always was a writer, but a professional one? I was afraid to dream of such a thing. Seemed audacious to me! Took 5 published novels for me to even refer to myself as a "writer" or "author"!

When did you write your first book and how old were you?

1992, I think. I was 26 or 27. It was a contemporary romance called REFUGE.

Approximately, how long does it usually take you to write a book?

I research and dream about books for a long time, then write them fast. Usually in about 3 weeks-3 months.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I listen to soundtracks as I write. It helps me "see" the book in my mind, like a movie playing out.




Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

All over the place. Research. News stories. Friends. Friends of friends. A writer is always asking herself, "What if..." questions.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Mmm, all I can remember are things I've learned lately...There were no tomatoes in Italy in medieval times. They came from the New World! And the Roman Forum was half-buried in dirt and brush in medieval times. A barber set up shop underneath one of the famous, huge arches. And Dante unified the Italian language...

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite? 

30-something. Hmmm, THE BEGOTTEN, THE BRIDGE, and WATERFALL

What do you think makes a good story?

Identification with the hero/heroine, good pacing, aha moments that move the heart as well as the mind.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Travel, cooking, watching movies.

What are three things you wouldn't want to do without?

Computers, showers and my bed

Are you currently working on any new novels?

Always. Currently an adult series called The Grand Tour. Book One, GLAMOROUS ILLUSIONS, releases Summer 2012.

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 3)

Discussion Questions for Chapters 12-17

1. In Siena, on her way to the ball at Palazzo Pubblico, Gabi likened her experience to being on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, the goal being "to see and be seen." If you were a peasant, watching from the crowd, what would you be thinking as this procession passed by?


I really don't know what I would be thinking. I probably would be excited at meeting a She-Wolf! 

2. Though quite nervous about dancing at the ball, Gabi discovers a strange feeling of connection to the time, the people, and the society through the unified beauty of the dance. Have you ever been in a position where you felt out of your element, but, in one, pinpointed moment, became a part of or connected to something bigger than your fear?


Not that I can think of.

3. The kiss. Oh, the kiss. When Marcello finally kisses Gabi, he believes the experience to be proof that they are meant to be together. What did you think about his assumption? Were you surprised at Gabi's reaction to it? Have you ever experienced a kiss that seemed to be prophetic in a similar (or opposite!) way?


I think it was romantic, but also sort of sudden to say that they were meant to be together because of a kiss....

4. Many go through their teen years with a subdued sense of immortality. Do you think Gabi has a sense of this teen feeling? And did you think Gabi's converse observation, "Sometimes death came hunting and there was no way to cut it off at the pass." was informed more by the experience of losing her father, her self-admitted closet hypochondria, or the forced maturation of being transported to a different time? How does this observation show Gabi's growth as a character?


I think it shows that she is mature for her age and has a good grasp on life. She understands that physical death is the inevitable.

5. In the span of a few moments, Gabi goes from sword-wielding teen beauty to man-killing warrior. Did you think her realization of the finality of death -- and her justification for its necessity -- was realistic? And, in her slippers, could you have done the same?


Yes, I found her reasoning realistic. I hope I never have to find out if I could do the same.

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 2)

Discussion Questions for Chapters 7-11

1. Gabi's search for her sister is made increasingly difficult by the fight for territory between Castello Forelli and Castello Paratore. At this point, do you think the rivalry is warranted? Why or why not?

I don't think I had an opinion about that yet (at least I don't recall that). But having read the series, I think it's sad how their families used to be close, but now there are non-stop wars.

2. Gabi aids Fortino by having his sickroom cleaned out and using steam to loosen the phlegm inside his lungs so he could breathe better. Have you ever found yourself in a situation that required you to rely on home remedies to aid yourself or another? What are some of your favorite home remedies?


I think natural and home remedies are great and I probably have had to use some before, but I can't think of any specific remedies.

3. Marcello and his men don't hide their surprise when they learn that Gabi is skilled with a sword. What did you think of this development? Has your initial impression of Gabi changed? Do you have any secret skills?


I love that she wields a sword! It is very cool and different. Secret skills? Not that I can think of...

4. "Our lips were so close, I could feel the heat of his breath on my skin." Gabi and Marcello's feelings for one another are beginning to stir. What do you think of Marcello as a romantic interest thus far? What do you think of his intended?


Of course I already like Marcello! He seems like a Prince Charming. I didn't particularly like Lady Rossi (especially knowing what I now know).

5. Marcello and Luca take turns teaching Gabi the dances of Toscana. Would you have liked to attend a ball like the one Gabi was practicing for? Do you like to dance? Do you know any cool dance moves? Extra (not really) points if you YouTube yourself dancing and share the video. Come on, it will be fun! :)

I don't know how to dance, but I think it would be fun (especially Ballroom/Renaissance & Medieval dances).

Waterfall Wednesdays (Week 1)

'Waterfall Wednesdays' if a read-along event where we discuss Lisa T. Bergren's novel 'Waterfall'. This week we are discussing Chapters 1-6.

Discussion questions and my answers for Chapters 1-6

1 - Waterfall opens with the introduction of Gabi, she's depressed, a little angry and is dealing with feelings of loneliness. Are you connecting with her this soon in the novel? Do you see things you like or dislike?

It's hard for me to remember how I felt about Gabi when I first read 'Waterfall' (I've now read all three books), but I think I already liked her character and I feel like we are similar in many aspects.

2 - Gabi gets to time travel back to 14th Century Italy- The Dark Ages in its prime. Is there any time in history that fascinates you and would you travel back if you could?

I don't think I would want to travel back in time - even if I could - to ANY time in history, but I find 1900's, Medieval time, and Henry VIII's story interesting.

3 - Most of the men, including Marcello have a very set opinion about a woman's place. Gabi gets manhandled a bit in these first few chapters, and even gets asked if she's a witch. The men are shocked when Gabi rides a horse like a man and shimmies down the castle walls. What do you think of men's mentality back then? Gentlemanly, chauvinistic, simple-minded?


I think it's a mix. Somewhat gentlemanly, but also chauvinistic.


4 - When Gabi becomes a part of this era, the people are immediately intrigued but suspicious of her. Many judge her by her difference. Do you think this is fair? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like an outsider or that others were misjudging you?


I don't think it's fair to be judged on differences and I think most people feel like an outsider at some point in their lives.


5 - What do you think the coolest thing would be about living in the Dark Ages? What would be the worst?


I think the coolest thing would be...hmmm that's tough, but I'll say the beautiful dresses and castles. The worst thing would be to not have plumbing and electricity.

Book Review: Torrent (River of Time #3) by Lisa Tawn Bergren

Torrent by Lisa Tawn Bergren

TORRENT SUMMARY:

Gabi and Lia Betarrini have learned to control their time travel, and they return from medieval Italy to save their father from his tragic death in modern times.   But love calls across the centuries, and the girls are determined to return forever—even though they know the Black Plague is advancing across Europe, claiming the lives of one-third of the population. In the suspenseful conclusion of the River of Time series, every decision is about life … and death.

My Review:

'Torrent' the third (and final) book in 'The River of Time' series and the fourth book that I've read by Lisa T. Bergren.

'Torrent' picks up right where 'Cascade' left off. After traveling through time to save their dad - Gabi, Lia, Adri (their mom), and Ben (their dad), travel back in time to 14th Century Italy.


Even though there is the threat of the 'Black Plague' arriving, getting killed, and/or tortured, Gabi and Lia still want to return and remain in Medieval Italy for as long as possible.

They will have to deal with wars (again), imprisonment (again), kidnapping, and forced marriage.

I loved this book! The story was so addicting and I finished 'Torrent' in under 2 days! There was alot of action, romance, and a ton of suspense! I liked many of the characters including: Gabi, Lia, Marcello, Luca, Ben, and Adri - to name some of them.


As I said 'Torrent' is very addicting and I don't think there was a "good" place to stop reading because I wanted to continue on and see where the story was going to continue. If you decide to read 'Torrent' be prepared to stay up late reading☺!

I REALLY hope that Lisa Bergren will write more books in the future with these characters (I don't want to say goodbye to them yet...) and if she does, I definitely plan on reading them!

I highly recommend the entire 'River of Time' series ('Waterfall', 'Cascade', and 'Torrent').
