Books I Finished Recently:

Nothing. Hit a bit of a reading slump at the beginning of the year, but now I'm finally reading again. :)

What I'm Currently Reading:

Fiction

About the book:
In 1715, Lady Blythe Hedley's father is declared an enemy of the British crown because of his Jacobite sympathies, forcing her to flee her home in northern England. Secreted to the tower of Wedderburn Castle in Scotland, Blythe quietly awaits the crowning of a new king. But in a house with seven sons and numerous servants, her presence soon becomes known.

No sooner has Everard Hume lost his father, Lord Wedderburn, than Lady Hedley arrives with her maid in tow. He has his own problems--a volatile brother with dangerous political leanings, an estate to manage, and a very young brother in need of comfort and direction. It would be best for everyone if he could send this misfit heiress on her way as soon as possible.

In this whirlwind of intrigue, ambitions, and shifting alliances, Blythe yearns for someone she can trust. But the same forces that draw her and Everard together also threaten to tear them apart.

About the book:
1964

Justice, Mississippi, is a town divided. White and black. Rich and
poor. Rule makers and rule breakers. Right or wrong, everyone assumes
their place behind a fragile façade that is about to crumble.  When
attorney Coop Lindsay agrees to defend a black man accused of murdering a
white teenager, the bribes and death threats don’t intimidate him. As
he prepares for the case of a lifetime, the young lawyer knows it’s the
verdict that poses the real threat—innocent or guilty, because of his
stand Coop is no longer welcome in Justice. As he follows his
conscience, he wonders just how far some people will go to make sure he
doesn’t finish his job?

2014

To some, the result of the trial still feels like a fresh wound even
fifty years later, when Coop’s grandson arrives in Justice seeking
answers to the questions unresolved by the trial that changed his
family’s legacy. When a new case is presented, again pitting white
against black, this third generation Lindsay may have the opportunity he
needs to right the wrongs of the past.

But hate destroys everything it touches, and the Lindsay family will not escape unscathed.

About the book:

A Family Made at Christmas

After taking guardianship of his late friend’s siblings and baby daughter, minister Levi Wallin hopes to atone for his troubled past on the gold fields. But it won’t be easy to convince the children’s wary elder sister to trust him. The more he learns about her, though, the more he believes Callie Murphy’s prickly manner masks a vulnerable heart…one he’s starting to wish he was worthy of.

Every man in Callie’s life chose chasing gold over responsibilities. Levi—and the large, loving Wallin family—might just be different. But she can tell he’s hiding something from her, and she refuses to risk her heart with secrets between them. Even as they grow closer, will their pasts keep them from claiming this unexpected new beginning?

Nonfiction:

About the book:
Would you give up sugar to experience the sweet presence of God in your life?

Many of us think that if our bodies become healthier, then we'll be healthier. But a healthy body doesn't do us a lot of good if we are spiritually malnourished. Welcome to the 40-Day Sugar Fast, a process that begins with us giving Jesus our sugar and ends with Jesus giving us more of Himself--the only thing that can ever truly satisfy our soul's deep hunger. On this journey you'll learn how to

· stop fixating on food and fix your eyes on Christ
· pinpoint the triggers that send you running to sugar
· lose weight as you gain faith
· turn to the Most High instead of the next sugar high

If you run to sugar for comfort or reward, eat mindlessly or out of boredom, feel physically and spiritually lethargic, or struggle with self-control, this fast will help you discover not only freedom from your cravings but an entirely new appetite for the good things God has for you.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. ~ Philippians 4:8
