Interview & Giveaway: Regina Walker ~ Author of "We Go On"

Welcome to Christian Bookshelf Reviews, Regina!! Will you tell us a little about yourself? 

Thank you for having me Melanie! I am so excited to be here sharing about me and my books. I am a write-at-home wife/mom and most importantly, Jesus girl. We live on a few acres and have a garden, chickens, horses, dogs, and cats.  

What is your debut novel, We Go On, about?

We Go On is about a family enduring the grief of losing their oldest son to suicide. They really wrestle with each other and God as they figured out what to do after their loss.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? 

I've written for as long as I can remember. I actually drafted my first novel ten years ago. I couldn't get it perfect and after butchering it and rebuilding it a few times, I was frustrated. That was a two year project. The next eight years saw me blogging off and on, and starting 11 other novels, none of which have reached the end of their first draft.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk? 

I don't argue with a muse. If I sit down to write and I draw a blank, I brain dump all my thoughts on a blank document. If clearing my mind doesn't get me in writing mode, then I sit and do a five-minute deep breathing exercise.   One of, or both of, those things always get me geared up and ready to put the words on the page.

Where do you like to write? 

I don't have my ideal writing space right now. Currently I either set up at my desk in the corner of my bedroom or I bring my laptop to my bed and get comfy. Someday, I want a home office that is just for my bookshelves and my writing.

What do you like to do when you're not writing? 

We are blended and have 7 kids between us. I homeschool the 3 youngest, which I LOVE (most of the time). I also love to ride horses, tend my garden, and read. I will curl up with my husband and watch crime series on TV because that's his love language (nevermind how hooked I get on those stories).  

What is your favorite genre to read and why?

Christian fiction. I like redemption and second chance stories. My life is a testament to the goodness of God and I guess I just really like that in the stories I read, too.  

What is your least favorite genre to read?

I don't care for anything scary. And nothing explicit.  

Is there a place you'd like to visit, but haven’t yet? 

In the US: Redwood National Forest and Mt. Rushmore

Internationally: I'd like to see Ireland.  

Do you have a favorite Bible verse?

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NLT  

 

Do you have a favorite song and/or movie?

Favorite song: Run to the Father by Cody Carnes and Another in the Fire by Hillsong United

Favorite movie:   Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley

What is your favorite holiday? 

All of the ones that give me a reason to cook a big feast and pies. I love it when family, friends, and neighbors come together to eat good food and spend time with each other.  

What is your favorite season and why is it your fav?

I am a spring/fall girl. I like moderate temperatures, I like watching everything come to life, and I like watching the earth prepare for slumber.

I am working on a second book for the Then Comes Hope collection, titled Still With Us. This book is going to dive into what a family deals with when a teenager attempts suicide and survives.

Thank you for having me, Melanie. What a great place to be this morning! 😊

Well, I’m a wife and mother, Christ-follower and life-struggler (like everyone else). Hubby and I are empty nesters with a daughter two hours away. Road trip! I like reading (of course), gardening when I can, the NFL, NASCAR (like any good Southerner), antiques, and eating out.

What is your novella, A Love Most Worthy, about?

A Love Most Worthy is mail-order bride novella set in 1900 Nome, Alaska during the gold rush. She wants a family. He only wants someone responsible enough to raise his orphaned nephews. The story really comes down to two people struggling to know they are worthy of being loved by others. Here’s the blurb:

She didn’t know which was colder,

an Arctic winter or her new husband’s heart.

Hallie Russell believes life should be lived to the fullest. For that reason, she sails to the gold rush town of Nome, Alaska to take her cousin’s place as the mail-order bride of a respected shopkeeper. But when her aloof husband’s wedding-night announcement rocks her plans for their marriage, Hallie sees her desire for a family to call her own vanish as quickly as the dreams of hopeful miners.

Tragedy led Rance Preston to repent of his rowdy ways and open a general store for the miners in Nome. Duped once by a vivacious female, he’s determined to never again let his heart overrule his head…until the high spirits of his new bride threaten his resolve.

When a misunderstanding comes to light, will they allow the gale force winds of insecurity to destroy what they each need most?

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? 

I wanted to be a cartoonist first. That was in third grade. Then a friend said she wanted to be a novelist, and lights flashed. Although I had considered it over the years, I was almost thirty before I began writing. I spent the next twenty years writing and selling small projects. I’ve been writing novels and novellas for the past ten years.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk? 

Hmm… That’s a tough one when you add the word “interesting.” I’m one of those writers who can’t turn off the inner editor. As long as the words flow, I can keep writing. As soon as I pause, I have to go back and reread what I just wrote, which leads to editing, which leads to being a s-l-o-w writer.

Where do you like to write? 

As soon as my daughter moved out, I took over her bedroom and made it into my office. On occasion, when no one is around, I’ll carry my laptop into another part of the house or outside on a good day, but usually, I’m holed up in my office where there are no distractions.

What do you like to do when you're not writing? 

When I’m not writing (or cooking/cleaning), I’m couch-coaching my Carolina Panthers on to victory (or not), watching those NASCAR drivers speed around the track, or at night, watching a series on Netflix with my husband. I read for about an hour before bedtime every night. I like to garden, but I don’t get much time to do that anymore.

What are your favorite and least favorite genres to read and why?

My go-to reading genres are historical (19th/early 20th centuries preferred) and anything with mystery/suspense. Of course, I write historical but like to add some bit of mystery/adventure to most of my stories. I don’t read, or rarely read, Amish or women’s fiction.

Is there a place you'd like to visit, but haven’t yet? 

Australia. I wrote a novella set in Sydney. After all the research, I’ve had a desire to see it in person. I cringe over the idea of the flight, though.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse? 

I have several favorites. My all-time favorite is Isaiah 55:8-9. Those verses remind me of who God is, and who I am not. Jeremiah 29:11 is an encouraging favorite. I’ve also found Colossians to be an inspiring book and, especially, verse 17 of chapter one: “He [Jesus] is before all things and in Him all things hold together.” Simple, but… Wow.

Do you have a favorite song and/or movie?

I have lots of favorite songs but not one that really stands out over another. I’m a big country music listener though. Favorite movie? One of my lifetime favorites is The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. I’ve watched the Pride and Prejudice movie with Keira Knightley over and over. I’m picky about the contemporary movies I watch. I can’t handle the language in many of them.

What is your favorite holiday? 

Christmas! My mom loved Christmas, so she always made it a big deal and a good time. We had a dachshund that enjoyed it as much as the rest of us. She would guard her gifts and never tear them open until given permission on Christmas day.

What is your favorite season and why is it your fav?

Spring is my favorite. Everything is green and the plants are waking up and flowering. The gardens aren’t overgrown. It’s when I spend the most time working outside.

Snowstorms or Thunderstorms? 

Snowstorms. Where I live, we generally get one good snowstorm a year, about 4-6 inches. Having been raised in northwest Indiana, I like the snow, but now I don’t have to spend the whole winter with it.

Chocolate or Vanilla?

Chocolate, absolutely.

Tea or Coffee? 

Coffee in the mornings is a must, but I do like tea on cold, winter afternoons.

Call or Text? 

Um…I’m a dinosaur. I don’t have texting, and I dread talking on the telephone. May I choose email?

Cats or Dogs?

That’s a tough one. I like cats, but I choose dogs, medium to large in size.

Early-bird or Night-owl? 

Neither. 😊 I get up early and get to work early, but I refer to myself as a 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. person. Those are my best hours. Sad, isn’t it?

Introvert or Extrovert?

Introvert all the way. I have my extroverted moments, but they’re usually digital (like now).

Facebook or Twitter? 

Facebook. I don’t post much, but read and respond to others’ posts. I like Twitter for sharing friends’ posts.

Mystery or Romance?

Ooh…both. I’ll read romance without mystery, but I prefer mystery/suspense with my romance.

Sneakers or Sandals?

I wear both. In the past few years, it’s been sandals, mostly, in warm weather. In cold weather, I keep my toes as warm as possible.

Are you currently working on any new novels? If so, could you give us a hint? 

At the moment, I’m writing a historical romance Christmas novella I’m hoping will be a prequel to a new series of three novels. The novels are in the brainstorming stage.

Interview & Giveaway! The Secret Slipper by Amanda Tero

 

What is your novel, The Secret Slipper, about?

The Secret Slipper is a dual-story about Raoul, a father who discovers that the daughter he thought was dead ten years ago just might be alive, and Lia, a poor, crippled lass who is under the cruelty of Bioti.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer? 

I don’t remember an exact point in which I thought, “I’m going to be a writer.” It just kind of happened. I’ve loved writing since before I was ten.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk? 

Hmm… I’m not sure that I have one. At least, not one that is abnormal. Eating M&M’s or other forms of chocolate aren’t exactly quirks. ;)

Where do you like to write? 

I usually write in my study/music studio at my desk. Though for a change at times, I’ll write outside when the weather is nice.

What do you like to do when you're not writing? 

Actually, writing is my side-hobby, so there are many things I do when not writing. Music is a major part of my life. I usually teach between 25-30 piano or violin students each semester (individual private lessons) and on top of that, I love arranging music for solo piano and other instruments. I’m also a part of a big family (eleven siblings; two of which are married), so I enjoy spending time with them.

What is your favorite genre to read and why?

Christian Historical! There is something about the years gone by that engages me as a reader. I also love reading just plain history. :)

What is your least favorite genre to read?

That would probably be dystopian/sci-fi. I’m just not a fan of futuristic. Maybe because I’m not a huge “make-believe” person.

Is there a place you'd like to visit, but haven’t yet? 

Of course! I’d love to visit Europe.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse? 

Proverbs 3:5-7 has kind of been my turn-to verse a lot in the past several years.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

What is your favorite season and why is it your fav?

Fall! I love the weather turning from warm to cool (though we live in Mississippi, so even fall isn’t always cool…)

Seeing as I’ve never been in a snowstorm, I do enjoy thunderstorms. :)

I sure am! My current WIP is Journey of Choice which follows the life of a boy named Nat. He is a New York street orphan, caught by the police mid-robbery and transported west via the Orphan Trains—at the brink of the Civil War. So there is some street story, some farm, and some war.

Port of Baltimore

Today’s stop is the Port of Baltimore. Baltimore has an amazingly rich maritime history and the Port of Baltimore plays a key role in Still Life.

Fun facts:

1. The port’s official name is The Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore. It was renamed for Helen Delich Bentley during the 2006 celebration of the port’s 300th birthday. Helen was an amazing lady, and I’m honored to say she was a fan of the Alaskan Courage and the beginning of the Chesapeake Valor series prior to passing late last year. If you’re ever interested in learning about this incomparable lady and the Port of Baltimore, be sure to check out Helen’s book Great Port of Baltimore Its First 300 Years 1706-2006.

2. The Port of Baltimore started in the 17th century as an access point for Maryland’s tobacco trade with England.

3. The Port of Baltimore became famous for its shipbuilders. They gained renown for their Baltimore clippers as well as the Continental Navy.

4. Baltimore is home to the USS Constellation. This ship is the last Civil War vessel afloat. It was built in 1854 and is the last all-sail warship built by the US Navy.

5. Baltimore’s Fort McHenry defended the Baltimore harbor during the War of 1812 and is the birthplace of the American National anthem, written by Francis Scott Key.

6. Baltimore’s waterfront neighborhood of Fell’s Point was the second largest point of immigration after Ellis Island.

I love driving home past the port, seeing the ships and knowing the rich history of my home state.
