Review: Nothing Short of Wondrous by Regina Scott

About the book:

It is 1886, and the government has given the US Cavalry control of Yellowstone. For widowed hotelier Kate Tremaine, the change is a welcome one. She knows every inch of her wilderness home like the back of her hand and wants to see it protected from poachers and vandals.

Refused a guide by Congress, Lieutenant William Prescott must enlist Kate's aid to help him navigate the sprawling park and track down the troublemakers. But a secret from his past makes him wary of the tender feelings the capable and comely widow raises in him. My thoughts:

Nothing Short of Wondrous was an interesting story. I enjoyed the setting and thought the characters were realistic. Kate was a wonderful main character. She was strong and in charge of her life. I loved how she knew the land so well and wasn't afraid to protect it.

The romance was good. I thought the characters were well-matched and the ending was satisfying. 

All in all, with romance, good characters, and a little danger, Nothing Short of Wondrous was a very nice read and one I think fans of historical romance will enjoy.

Review: A Distance Too Grand by Regina Scott

About the book:

Meg Pero has been assisting her photographer father since she was big enough to carry his equipment, so when he dies she is determined to take over his profession--starting with fulfilling the contract he signed to serve on an Army survey of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in 1871. What she doesn't realize is that the leader of the expedition is none other than the man she once refused to marry.

Captain Ben Coleridge would like nothing more than to leave without the woman who broke his heart. He can't afford to be distracted during this survey, which is a screen for another, more personal mission, one he cannot share with any member of his team.

As dangers arise from all sides--and even from within--Meg and Ben must work together to stay alive, fulfill their duties, and, just maybe, rekindle a love that neither had completely left behind.

My thoughts:

A Distance Too Grand was different than I was expecting, but nonetheless a good read overall.

I enjoyed the setting and how the heroine was so passionate about photography. Reading some of the descriptions on the scenery was so good and I liked that part.

The characters were fine, although I never felt connected to them and I don't know why...maybe because of the romance and the way that played out. Although I had a difficult time empathizing with the heroine at times, I did enjoy it in the end.

All in all, A Distance Too Grand was enjoyable to read and I recommend it to fans of this genre. I look forward to Regina Scott's next novel.

Welcome to Christian Bookshelf Reviews, Regina! Will you share a little about yourself and your latest book?

Thanks for the warm welcome, Melanie! I’m the author of more than 30 sweet historical romances and a major history geek in general. When I’m not reading or writing, you’ll find me in museums or with reenactors learning more about what life was like in the past. Although most of my books have been set in the Regency period of England (think Jane Austen and Napoleon), my last few books have been set much closer to home—in pioneer Seattle. The fourth book in my Frontier Bachelors series was out in January. Instant Frontier Family tells the story of a young Irishwoman determined to make a prosperous life for herself and her orphaned half sister and brother by starting a new bakery. Love is not part of Maddie O’Rourke’s plan, until her siblings start matchmaking.

 

What do you hope readers come away with after reading your newest story?

I hope they come away with a sense of family, that love might mean sacrifice, but when it’s done for those you love, it’s worth everything.

 

Do you find it more fun to write stand-alones or series? 

I love series. It’s too hard to say goodbye to characters after one book!

 

Who are some of your favorite authors whose books have never disappointed you?

The late Elizabeth Mansfield, Lloyd Alexander, Mary Stewart, and recently, Catherine Lloyd.

  

What's the last thing you celebrated, not including birthdays or holidays?

My husband recently earned his third degree black belt in Shudokan karate. I was so proud of him!
